The officers will be deployed both on the trains and station platforms in an effort to protect commuters.

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille says that everything is on track for 71 rail enforcement officers to be deployed to the Cape Town rail network next month.

The premier visited the Law Enforcement training academy in Observatory on Tuesday.

She says the dedicated cohort of officers will prioritise Metrorail's central line, which has been the hardest hit by vandalism.

The central line runs from Cape Town to Khayelitsha.

The officers will be deployed both on the trains and station platforms in an effort to protect commuters.

Zille explains that the officers will focus on vandalism and crime experienced by commuters.

We are hoping that it will make things much safer and easier, and protect our trains from the assault that they have been experiencing.

Helen Zille, Western Cape Premier

Zille adds that rail agency Prasa still needs to pay its share R16-million share towards the project costs, which provincial government has already sacrificed.

These are stopgap measures for a government that is having to take away money from other services to put money into policing.
