Gupta family’s naturalisation inquiry continues in Parliament today

Malusi Gigaba and former Home Affairs Director-General Mkuseli Apleni are expected to appear before Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs on Thursday, as the investigation of the Gupta family’s naturalisation continues in Parliament.

The investigation into the early naturalisation of the Gupta family in Parliament entered into its second phase on Wednesday with witnesses being called on to answer approximately 26 questions explaining the circumstances under which family members were granted South African citizenship.

Former and current Home Affairs officials who were central to granting visas and work permits to the family’s associates and employees gave their testimonies.

After the initial phase of the naturalisation inquiry, the committee concluded that it had identified gaps which needed to be clarified by certain people to assist the committee to arrive at a conclusion. It also said that there is a need to broaden the scope of the inquiry beyond the family of Ajay Gupta.

Member of the portfolio committee, Haniff Hoosen says it has taken them a year to get to this point and to even get started on the inquiry.

Originally, we wanted to get to the involvement of the Gupta family into the capture of Home Affairs and the role that senior officials have played in giving the Gupta family preferential treatment.

But we also looked at the possibility that it could have gone beyond them because many of the Gupta family members were granted citizenship or visas even prior to Gigaba's time.

He adds the aim of the inquiry to ascertain who did what in the Gupta naturalisation.
