Mathematics is a necessary skill that is used throughout our lives, thus it is an important skill to acquire in school.
Unfortunately, the lack of confidence continues to be a huge factor in students’ anxiety towards mathematics. Now, according to the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (Saipa), there had been a dramatic drop in the number of pupils taking accountancy as a subject at school.
Technical Executive at Saipa Faith Ngwenya says there are a number of reasons why the number has dropped.
One is the lack of interest from learners especially after doing Grade 8 and 9. And when they choose the subjects in Grade 10, they don't select accounting.— Faith Ngwenya, Technical Executive at Saipa
He adds what they are also getting is that in some cases, learners also take accounting in Grade 10 and drop it in Grade 11 because they find it to be too daunting.
And then obviously choose another subject that they think they will pass more easily.— Faith Ngwenya, Technical Executive at Saipa
