Healing is always at the heart of all my efforts - visual artist Igshaan Adams

Bonteheuwel-born visual artist Igshaan Adams says that he's always been interested in how his home environment has influenced his identity, worldview and self-image.

Adams is the 2018 winner of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Art.

He has held several solo exhibitions and has participated in a number of group shows both locally and abroad.

Adams was born in 1982 in Cape Town, South Africa.

His experimental and provocative art interweaves performance, installation, weaving, sculpture and other disciplines.

He uses art to explore his identity and his experiences of race, class, religion and sexuality, and more.

I've always considered my role as an artist. We try to find multiple perspectives on a certain subject matter and we try and bring that forth.

I grew up in the 80s. My grandfather was actually a policeman in the apartheid era and so I think we were kind of sheltered from the politics somewhat in a way of protecting us.

The dynamics of apartheid was always quite real in our domestic environment. My mom's older sister was one of the coloured people who managed to pass as white.

I was so concerned with where things went wrong with my own formation because I realised at some point that I was deeply scarred and that it would take a lot effort for me to find peace within myself; to heal.
