SPCA warns of distemper virus spreading that could lead to many dogs' deaths

The SPCA has issued a warning to dog owners to be vigilant of their pets’ behaviour as they could have contracted distemper virus.

There have been a few cases reported in the City of Cape Town already.

Spokesperson for Cape Of Good Hope SPCA, Belinda Abraham says the distemper virus affects the dog's respiratory, gastrointestinal, respiratory and central nervous system. Common symptoms are fever, eye inflammation, nasal discharge, vomiting and diarrhoea and hardening of nose and foot pads.

It is a terrible disease but fortunately, it is completely preventable.

Abrahams says there's been an increase in dogs contracting this disease. It has led to the deaths of nearly 300 dogs in the Knysna area where it was detected in March this year.

She says dog owners need to ensure that they know the signs as well as ensuring that their pets are vaccinated against the disease.

Any of the welfare organisations that have vet mechanics are able to supply the vaccination.
