PSA says national health department is mum over poor condition of building

The Public Servants Association (PSA) says there has been no progress in their engagement with the National Health and Public Works Departments over the state of the Civitas building in Pretoria.

Workers have downed tools over concerns around the building where they work.

PSA deputy general manager Tahir Maepa says the department has still not addressed safety concerns, despite these issues being raised over the past few months.

So far nothing has changed, in fact I think we are at the point where we are at loggerheads.

Tahir Maepa, Deputy General Secretary of the PSA

We are not the ones who wrote a report about the state of that building, in terms of the report,it says the building is only 20% compliant.

Maepa denies claims that striking workers vandalised newly installed safety features in the building.

Any element of criminality, we condemn it, if it is true we expect the department to act accordingly. The situation of the fire extinguishers, sprinklers... those are issues we raised, that they are not working. All of a sudden after we have raised it, they go to the media and say that those things are broken, of course they are, they have never worked.

Meanwhile the department's spokesperson Popo Maja insists work has been done to address the workers concerns.

It is not accurate to say nothing has been done ever since these grievances have been brought forward.

Popo Maja, national health department spokesperson

What we are asking the court is for them to pronounce as to whether the building is posing a risk to staff.
