Finally a solution to the Muizenberg truck-eating bridge

The City of Cape Town is almost winning against Muizenberg’s notorious truck-eating bridge by installing an Intelligent Transport System (ITS).

The railway bridge crossing in Atlantic Road, Muizenberg claims at least two victims a month, with truck drivers wedging their vehicles underneath, causing hours of traffic delays.

Councillor Eddie Andrews, Mayoral Committee Member for Area South explained how the system works.

This system is able to detect the actual height of the vehicle. So there are two lanes at the traffic intersection and if the height is more than 2.5 metres, the signalisation board will flash at you for about 30 sec notifying you to turn right and not left.

Eddie Andrews, Mayoral Committee Member for Area South

We are very excited about this and hope it will further reduce the number of trucks getting stuck under the bridge.
