Girl's toe transplanted to hand in groundbreaking surgery
Doctors at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town have performed groundbreaking surgery on a 4-year old girl.
Angelique Anna Schroder has become one of the youngest patients in South Africa to undergo a successful microvascular foot to hand transfer, which means that her toe is now a functioning digit on her hand.
Her father Dirk Schroder says they are relieved that the surgery went well, but every day is still a challenge.
There is still quite a long way to go, we gotta get the finger to function properly now so it is going to be another six months.Dirk Schroder, Angelique's Father
He adds that the process started four years ago, and says when she was born where they got a big shock in their lives and didn't know what to do.
One of my dad's friends was a plastic surgeon in America and he contacted them and he got a hold of the red cross and Red Cross got hold of Cape Town. And we're not too sure of what was going to happen, we were new to this, we were very worried about what's going to happen and what the future was going to be like.Dirk Schroder, Angelique's Father
