More Metrorail woes as three more trains set alight

On Friday, Cape Town's rail service suffered a triple blow.

Three train fires were reported at Cape Town, Firgrove and Mbekweni stations.

According to the Regional manager at Metrorail Richard Walker, the rail service has lost 40 coaches which is a loss estimated at hundreds of millions in just one year.

We are looking at R300 million just in damages to the coaches since 2015.

Richard Walker, Western Cape Regional Manager at Metrorail

The rate in which we are losing our coaches it is far exceeding our ability to bring them back and that is a major concern.

Walker says there will be more cancellations on the Northern and Southern line due to lack of trains.

Walker says delays will run to over an hour on the central line.
