Tanzania's Jokate Mwegelo on inspiring Africa's youth

Journalist and radio personality Lee Kasumba's series features guests who share how they are representing the African continent in a positive light – and how we could all be doing it too!

Jokate Mwegelo is an actress, entrepreneur as well as the District Commissioner of Kisarawe district in Pwani region in Tanzania.

She talks to Lee Kasumba about youth leadership on the continent. She calls for Africa’s youth around the world to uplift Africa themselves.

I wanted to engage the younger demographic and population and just go back and talk to them about the opportunities we have in our country and on our continent and how we should be very assertive and proactive in how we grab these opportunities.

It is not easy, she says, but well worth their while.

Mwegelo talks about the importance of giving back. She has been involved in organising sports facilities at schools.

It is important to me that kids learn inside the classroom and outside the classroom.

Sports is a great way for young people to stay away from activities like drug abuse...and gives them discipline and help them find themselves...find their purpose and their passion.
