'I was a laughing stock': Parental drinking and its effect on children

Alcohol abuse by parents has been linked to the scourge of child abuse and other societal problems.

This was cited in a report commissioned by a cross-section of Members of Parliament and peers which found 15-percent of children had their bedtime routine disrupted due to their parents’ drinking, and 18% were embarrassed at seeing their parents drunk.

John Dube (not his real name) from Alcoholics Anonymous, shared his story on The Afternoon Drive.

It affected the child so much that the school work was dropping. We were not aware that it was alcohol that was affecting the child, we blamed the child that she was not concentrating.

John Dube

When I would pee, I didn't care, I would just stand by the street and pee and my child was affected by her friends saying we saw your father doing this.

John Dube

I remember when other kids had clothes bought for them on Christmas, I had received my bonus, I went to the shebeen with the intention just to buy two... I went home after two days with no bonus.

John Dube

In the neighborhood I was a laughing stock but I reached a stage where my partner found Alcoholic Anonymous.
