[LISTEN] Should MPs be involved in the appointment of a new NDPP?

President Cyril Ramaphosa has ruled out Parliament playing a role in the appointment of a new National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head.

Opposition parties insist however they want to be part of the decision making, arguing for a more transparent and inclusive process.

The Constitution makes it the president’s prerogative to appoint an NDPP.

Karima Brown spoke to Executive Secretary at Council For The Advancement Of The Constitution (Casac) Lawson Naidoo and Executive Director at Corruption Watch David Lewis to get their view on the matter.

In the long term the correct process should be one that involves the judicial services commission that is currently responsible for nominating judges who are then appointed by the president. It should be done by a body that has some credibility and the confidence of the people of South Africa.

I am not sure that it would be a good idea to leave this to Parliament either until political parties in Parliament start to demonstrate that they have the capacity to agree with each other. We think that there should be a transparent inclusive process and it is quite possible that there'd be one that involves maybe members of the committees of parliament...
