Eyewitness News reporter Barry Bateman shares the latest on the Finance Minister's state capture inquiry testimony.

Finance Minister Nhanhla Nene has conceded that his decision to meet with the Guptas on several occasions at their Saxonwold home between 2010 and 2014 was an error of judgement, saying that he should have reconsidered going into these meetings.

He says his conduct falls short of living up to the ideal of being beyond reproach.

Nene has apologised to South Africans.

Eyewitness News reporter Barry Bateman has more on the story.

He expresses the position that he is of course human as well and can make such mistakes, however he has come out and been honest and such he hopes he can get forgiveness from the public for these errors.

The minister's credibility has further been called into question following reports that Nene's son Siyabonga Nene and a little-known business partner Amir Mirza approached the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) regarding an investment while his father was deputy Finance Minister and chair of the PIC.

In the same apology it does touch on that issue of the PIC deal as revealed by amaBhungane. He says that on those allegations being circulated, he is glad that the Zondo Commission was appraised on these particular allegations and has agreed to investigate them. He has further urged anybody with information related to this to please come forward.

Bateman says some of the public are not buying the minister's apology.

I always look to social media to gage what people are saying about this. They are not buying it, people are unhappy about what has happened here.

Barry Bateman, EWN Senior Reporter

I have spoken to organisations that normally comment on corruption related matters. They are not willing to go on the record at this stage... I think there is also a feeling that they want to see that Minister Nhanhla Nene is the good guy that he was made out to be.
