If Nhlanhla Nene survives this then the Pope is not Catholic - political analyst

There are reports that Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene has asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to relieve him of his duties following his appearance before the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture last week.

While giving his testimony, Nene confirmed that he visited Saxonwold (home of the Gupta family) numerous times between 2009 and 2014.

EWN reporter Clement Manyathela says although there was no confirmation by the Presidency, It is understood that Nene offered to resign during a phone call to the President.

The only question now is whether that conversation happened or not and I suppose the only people that can tell us is the Presidency.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

The question is should the President use this as an opportunity to root out corrupt ministers and let Nene go, asks Manyathela.

However, if the President was to let all the ministers who have met with the Guptas go, it is predicted that would be half of the Cabinet.

Themba Maseko tweeted a few days ago that if every single person in Cabinet was to say whether or not they have been to the Gupta family Saxonwold compound, you could feel up FNB stadium.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

Can the President take a decision to remove Nhlanhla Nene based on his meeting with the Gupta family?... because we still don't know the details of those meetings...

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

If he is going to do that there are other people who have been to the Gupta compound. Are you going to remove them based on their interactions and having failed to disclose those interactions...

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

Political analyst, Aubrey Matshiqi says there is pressure for Nene to resign. However, President Cyril Ramaphosa is not going to make this decision alone but has to consult inside and outside the ANC.

Matshiqi says there is a likelihood the external factor will determine what the President should do on this because the ANC is divided and chances of the party uniting on this matter are slim.

All I would say is that if Nhlanhla Nene survives this then the Pope is not Catholic

Aubrey Matshiqi, Political analyst

The indiscretion is so small that he lied about this and that seems to be the problem.

Aubrey Matshiqi, Political analyst

Matshiqi says this is just the beginning. 'More dominos are going to fall' he says, which is a dilemma for the President because 'what if he appoints someone who is the next domino to fall?'.
