CEO in the office of the Tax Ombudsman, Eric Mkhawane, says the office is monitoring allegations that Sars has been arbitrarily delaying tax refunds to citizens.

Mkhawane adds that the mandate of the ombud's office can still be improved to help taxpayers in need of recourse.

He explains that citizens must first exhaust all avenues within Sars before laying a complaint with the Tax Ombudsman.

It's almost half a billion rand. And that's just the top 10 complaints, this doesn't include all the refund-related complaints.
