'I think it's good to have someone with experience from the Reserve Bank'

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has welcomed the appointment of Tito Mboweni as finance minister.

The appointment follows the resignation of Nhlanhla Nene, in light of his testimony at the state capture inquiry.

READ: 'Production line of potential ANC leaders has run out'

I think that it is good that we have someone with experience that comes from the Reserve Bank, I think our economy is in serious difficulty, we need to be able to ensure that we deliver work opportunities for people.

Mmusi Maimane, DA leader

Let us not forget and let us not kid ourselves into thinking that we must create some messianic complex, the reality of South Africa is that we are running out of money and people can't find jobs.

Mmusi Maimane, DA leader

Economist Duma Gqubule says he doesn't agree with the prevailing consensus and questions the appointment and the 'recycling of old ideas'.

We are in the worst post-apartheid economic crisis and there is no plan to get us out of this crisis, Our economy has not grown for the past decade and I do think the Reserve Bank under Tito Moboweni mismanaged the economy in the wake of the global financial crisis.

Duma Gqubule, economist
