'National health department won't acknowledge shortage of anti-retroviral drugs'

The Stop Stockouts Project which monitors and reports on medicine shortages, has warned that the country is running out of anti-retroviral drugs.

It says stocks of second- and third-line ARVs and contraceptives have run out across the country, a shortage that has has apparently been developing over the past two months.

The National Sector Leader at People Living with HIV, a body affiliated to the Treatment Action Campaign, Andrew Mosane says the national department has not acknowledged the crisis.

There is no acknowledgement of shortages. The minister has been silent. The only person that spoke to City Press was Mr Popo Matla who told the paper he was not aware of the shortages but after consulting with officials he confirmed that it was true and said the department is working on it.

My problem is what is the plan of procuring these shortages of medicines and the roll out to provinces including individuals who are missing their doses to date?
