Veteran journalist, author and columnist, Max Du Preez, says Botha was almost a larger than life, jovial figure.

A very strong personality, big presence and always full of jokes. He was a hard party man but also a hard-partying man and played a big role inside the party in the National Party politics and the more progressive members of the National Party rallied behind him.

He adds that Botha's major contribution was in foreign affairs especially in the region where he was instrumental in making peace in Angola and delivering interference in Namibia.
