Idols judge Unathi Nkayi gets intimate - opens up about money, beliefs about it

My father insisted that we never ever open accounts… never ever go into debt! Respect debt, and fear debt!

Unathi Nkayi

Always! [When asked if money was ever a worry growing up.]

Unathi Nkayi

I have a weakness for Red Bottoms [designer Christian Louboutin's signature shoe]… I lost count [when asked how many pairs she owns]…

Unathi Nkayi

Each week The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviews a famous person about her or his attitude to money (hopes and fears, successes and failures, etc.) as part of his weekly “Make Money Mondays, Personal Edition” feature.

This week he interviewed singer-songwriter and Idols judge Unathi Nkayi.

Nkayi co-owns Lucky Bean Media – a creative firm that specialises in reality television production, branded content and commercials.

She was born in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape but grew up in the United Kingdom.

Nkayi studied at the University of Utrecht (International Media Studies) in the Netherlands and Rhodes University (Journalism and Drama) in Grahamstown.

Her song “Sgubhu” features on the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning South African blockbuster “Tsotsi”.

  • What does Nkayi believe about money?

  • Does it keep her up at night?

  • Does she spend like crazy or save compulsively?

  • How did her childhood experiences of money shape her views?

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

I’m rediscovering myself… it’s challenging, character building but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Unathi Nkayi

Television is my first love… but radio grabbed me and didn’t let go of me…

Unathi Nkayi

I see money as a commodity to give you the life you design… I have to work for it. I have to invest in myself to make more of it…

Unathi Nkayi

I’ve been very blessed. I have different streams of income...

Unathi Nkayi

'Idols' knows that I invoice at the end of the year… that’s for school fees and holidays…

Unathi Nkayi

I took all my freelance money to fund the tour myself…

Unathi Nkayi

My most extravagant trip was in 2016… I flew to Amsterdam first class…
