Many residents are rebuilding structures from wood and corrugated iron using the starter kits provided by The City of Cape Town.

Khayelitsha resident Lebohang Mabi says many locals displaced by the devastating fire have been forced to stay with neighbours and family members, while others are sleeping at a nearby community hall.

Rebuilding continues following the weekend blaze.

One person died and more than 2 300 were displaced after a blaze swept through a section of Town Two on Saturday.

In another fire that day, 1 400 were left homeless in Kosovo, Philippi.

Many Khayelitsha residents are hard at work rebuilding structures they lost in Saturday’s fire in the blistering 34°C heat, reports EWN's Monique Mortlock.

Residents have begun rebuilding structures made of wood and corrugated iron using the starter kits provided by The City of Cape Town.

The City has apparently given the go-ahead for residents to begin rebuilding on the land.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the councillor of Khayelitsha's Ward 93 says discussion continue with community members and other stakeholders to allocate new structures and discuss a more permanent solution.

Residents have been rebuilding since Sunday, officials say.

They've started rebuilding using the starter kits that The City of Cape Town has given them.

It's scorching hot. It's about 34 degrees, but people are hard at work and carrying the materials.

Other residents living in more formal housing opposite Town Two have also lent a hand.

It's quite terrible that the Khayelitsha area is getting used to the fact that we are having these fires... This one was bigger than what we usually experienced.

For the past few days some of us have been sleeping with neighbours, family members, and others are sleeping at a nearby community hall.

We've lost our clothes, some school children have lost their school uniform, shoes and books. Food is the main source that is needed.
