Hillary and Bill Clinton, Caster Semenya at Joburg's Discovery Leadership Summit

(The Money Show is brought to you by Nedbank. See Money Differently.)

The Discovery Leadership Summit kicks off in Johannesburg on 1 November.

Some of the world’s most influential people will get together to share and brainstorm ideas on solving the world’s most pressing problems.

Former American president Bill Clinton and former American secretary of state Hillary Clinton will join the line-up that includes the likes of South African gold medallist Caster Semenya and former British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Also at the Summit is Lord Jim O’Neill, creator of the “Bric” acronym and ex-chairperson of Goldman Sachs Asset Management.

O’Neill is of the opinion that, if we lose the arms race against bacteria, 10 million lives could be lost by 2050, costing the world economy $100 trillion.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed O'Neill.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for quotes from it).

If other countries are rational and don’t get sucked into this [trade war], the scope for world trade to continue to rise is quite high.

Jim O’Neill

It [Brexit] should never have gone to a referendum, but it is what it is… but it isn’t the most important economic challenge facing the UK…

Jim O’Neill

Perhaps I should’ve called it [BRIC] ‘IC’…

Jim O’Neill

Nigeria [the economy] could be extremely big…

Jim O’Neill

My old friend Tito Mboweni has become Finance Minister… I’m delighted. I think South Africa can do well…

Jim O’Neill
