The age of the child or children can often play a key factor in how a parent navigates their dating and love life, Dawson-Cosser says.

She advises that there needs to be a balance between the new relationship and the relationship with the co-parent.

Dawson-Cosser argues that there must be boundaries around time for the current partner and for the ex to co-parent.

She says that new partners or step-parents also need to accommodate the space for co-parents to raise their kids.

Karabo, caller

I truly regret it. I was with somebody who had been in a relationship with his baby's mother for like 10 years... He was still trying to figure out this whole dating thing, and co-parenting, and also mourn his relationship while being with me.

Andy, caller

There was a bit of a struggle between me and the baby mama.

Zanele, caller

I had one relationship where my daughter got very attached to the guy, and then he left. It was more traumatic for her than me.
