George residents begin evacuations as Outeniqua blaze continues

Some George residents are being evacuated due to an ongoing fire on the Outeniqua mountain range.

George Municipality is currently evacuating residents in Blanco Golden Valley and Step Aside as a precautionary measure.

210 firefighters from Working on Fire and firefighters from the George and Garden Route District municipalities have joined forces.

Firefighters are using backburns and firebreaks in an attempt to contain the blaze, while aerial resources are also surveying the scene by air.

The blaze broke out on Wednesday.

The Outeniqua Pass and the Montagu Pass near George remain closed as firefighters continue to battle a veld fire, Working on Fire's Lauren Howard confirms.

Meanwhile, in Masiphumelele, at least 50 informal structures were destroyed on Monday morning in a shack fire that left approximately 150 people displaced. No injuries were reported.

The fire is still active high up on the mountain slopes... We are trying to prevent this fire from spreading any further.
