The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says it will deal with a Khayelitsha learner who fraudulently posed as a fire victim AFTER he completes his matric exams.
A grade 12 learner from a Khayelitsha high school posted on Twitter that he was a victim of the blaze that swept through a section of Town Two last week.
Some media outlets featured the young man in their articles and his Twitter post received over 2 000 responses from people wanting to donate.
WCED ministerial spokesperson Jessica Shelver says she came across the post, but did not recognise his name from her official list of affected matric learners.
After investigating, it emerged that the pupil was not from the affected community and was not directly impacted by the fire as he had alleged.
Shelver says she contaced each person who had responded to the Twitter post to notify them of the fraud.
She says many people had pledged money, stationery, clothing and other items.
The department has contacted the learner and his mother to remove the misleading post and he has since deleted his Twitter account.
Shelver advises that officials will deal with the matter once the learner has completed his exams.
She says the nine pupils who have been directly affected by the fire have shown up for all their matric exams so far.
