Family claims man died after assault at rehab centre shutdown by SDD

The Gauteng Social Development Department has promised to close the Magaliesburg Health Centre, after a patient died there this month.

44 year-old Muhammed Shaik was admitted to the private centre's rehabilitation section at the beginning of October. His family is claiming he was assaulted there and died as a result.

Gauteng Social Development Department spokesperson, Mbangwa Xaba says the centre was operating illegally since 2017.

Their operating registration lapsed in January of 2017. Ordinarily they shouldn't have been admitting patients.

The shutting down is always as a last resort. We tried. Ordinarily we would rather have people comply and those that are not compliant to come forward to be assisted rather than to shutdown because if we shut facilities down on issues of non-compliance, it may exacerbate the problem.

Mbangwa Xaba, Gauteng Social Development Department spokesperson

We would rather encourage people to come forward and have government assist them to comply.
