The uMgungundlovu community has been given back the land on the KZN Wild Coast after a landmark settlement agreement.

Families who were forcibly removed to make way for Wild Coast resort nearly 40 years have finally got justice.

The uMgungundlovu community has been given back the land on the KwaZulu-Natal Wild Coast after a landmark settlement agreement.

This land includes the area on which the renowned Sun International Casino and Resort is built.

The agreement was signed between the community, Sun International and the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform last week.

The agreement will see the claimants receive all 700 hectares of the land back, a 28.4% shareholding in the resort, a cash-payout, and monthly rental sum for the land the multi-million rand resort was built upon.

Human rights lawyer Richard Spoor, who represented the land claimants, explains that the community will lease the portion of land where the casino and resort have been built.

Spoor explains how the settlement was reached.

They are getting all the land back, but they will lease the part where the casino and resort are.

The rest of the land will be made available for development.

It's been a very long road. The claim was lodged a very long time ago. It's been close on 20 years.

The claimants were organised as a communal property association (CPA).
