Homes have been evacuated in the north of the city, in the areas included Blanco Golden Valley and Step Aside.

About 180 people are being housed at the George Town Hall.

Meanwhile, a team of Knysna Volunteer fire rangers has been working to contain fires in the Karatara area.

Volunteer Coordinator John Noble runs the joint operations centre for volunteers which are assisting with fires in Southern Cape.

Noble explains that windy conditions remain a challenge, and says some hotspots could easily flare up at any moment.

He says this is the volunteer group's first response since the Knysna fires in June 2017.

Municipal fire services, Working On Fire and other volunteer organisations have been working together.

The situation remains volatile, we've got very gusty winds. It's still a very unabtasle situtaion
