Extreme athlete ran 250 km to raise funds for Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital

51-year-old David Barnard has completed multi-stage desert races on seven continents to raise money for good causes.

Extreme athlete and social activist, David Barnard, recently ran 250 km through the Kalahari Desert to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital.

The hospital has been forced to open in phases due to lack of funds

The 51-year-old athlete is the first African to have completed multi-stage desert races on seven continents.

He says he saw his passion as an opportunity to raise awareness and funding for good causes.

I derive a lot of my motivation from the organisation that I support. If you take up these raises to do something good or to support an organisation, there is added pressure that you have to get to the finish line.

Come hell or high water you just have to finish it to the end. You have to have a hard head and be mentally tough and with a little experience, you get a little smarter on how to approach these things.

Barnard is aiming to raise R250 000 for the hospital and is appealing to South Africans to donate as little as R100 to reach the target.

This is an appeal to as many South Africans to put aside as little as R100 for this good cause.

The children's hospital is a legacy project that celebrates the legacy of Madiba. For many years over thousands of children in Southern Africa will benefit from its very unique service.
