The Pretoria Magistrates Court has referred rape accused Nicholas Ninow for a psychiatric evaluation.
Ninow is accused of raping a seven-year-old girl at a Dros restaurant.
He s facing charges including rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
It’s understood the 20-year-old followed the little girl to the bathrooms at the restaurant and raped her in September.
Ninow has made his third court appearance on Thursday morning while political parties, NGOs and activists attend proceedings.
The 20-year-old will be referred to Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital for mental observation, reports EWN's Mia Lindeque.
He will be booked into the institution by 28 November.
Defence lawyer Riaan du Plessis says Ninow has a history of mental illness and was apparently diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2013.
Various political parties, NGOs and activists have been protesting outside court.
Many activists feel it's unfair that the accused is using his mental status to try "get off the hook", Lindeque explains.
