No changes to water management devices despite Level 5 water restriction shift

The City of Cape Town eased water restrictions from level 6B to level 5 starting from 1 October. This included the increase in the personal water use limit from 50 to 70 litres per person per day.

Concerns and questions have been raised about water management devices which were fitted to a number of household water meters.

Would these devices be adjusted to take into account the new changes?

Mayco Member for Informal Settlements, Water and Waste Services, Xanthea Limberg says they have installed about 33 000 devices mostly in indigent households and will not be adjusted.

Their devices won't be adjusted because it is part of the indigent package.

The only instance where there would be a possibility of an adjustment is if we reduce levels of restrictions.

The current 350 litres that the current WMD are set at equates to 87.5 litres per person per day for a household of 4 and that's currently more than level 5 water restrictions.

Only when we get to level 3 water restrictions would we consider adjusting these metres to an appropriate level of restrictions, which will not include indigent households.
