New CT mayor Plato plans to focus on policing and employ more metro cops

Dan Plato has been voted in as the new mayor of Cape Town to take over from Patricia de Lille who tendered her resignation as mayor last week.

According to EWN reporter Monique Mortlock, Plato won by 146 votes out of the 208 councillors present. He was up against fellow mayoral candidates, Xolani Sotashe of the ANC who received 53 and the ACDP’s Grant Haskin who received 3 votes.

Plato was voted via secret ballot. There were six abstentions.

When he was handed a mayoral chain, Plato spoke about focusing on policing as we know he was the Western Cape's MEC for Community Safety, something that lies close to his heart.

Mortlock says there was divided response to Plato being mayor of Cape Town, with others saying they will give him support while others are saying he has a lot on his plate because he is entering a DA caucus that is divided.
