US midterm elections explained in simple terms to baffled non-Americans

Normally midterms don’t amount to much. Few seats turn over. But this year is a referendum on Trump… The optimism is running high in the Democratic Party… the odds are pretty good they’ll take over the House of Representatives… But I don’t think the Senate will change…

Americans on Tuesday vote in a four-yearly “midterm election”.

What is it, and what are the issues that dominate this year’s $5.2 billion (R73 billion) election?

With the Republican Party and President Donald Trump in control of both the Senate and the House; they have until now enjoyed the full support of Congress.

Polling suggests the Democrats have a fair chance of wresting control of the House.

Confused about what the heck all this mean?
