'Eskom is completely disregarding the framework signed at the job summit'

Cosatu says it is disappointed that Eskom has announced retrenchments disregarding what was agreed upon at the job summit.

Cosatu's first deputy president Mike Shingange says it is very disappointed by a statement issued by Eskom that it is planning to retrench management staff in order to reduce the exorbitant wage bill.

Shingange says Eskom is embarking on an illegal retrenchment, because in terms of the Labour Relations Act if a company wants to retrench unionised employees it must first issue a Section 189 to the affected union.

He says Eskom hasn't consulted with Cosatu to discuss this issue.

The decision taken by Eskom is in contradiction with the framework signed at the recent job summit in terms of the country finding solutions to the unemployment crisis in the country, he adds.

They are disregarding everything that is contained in that framework and that is something we are not going to take lightly.

Mike Shingange, Cosatu's first deputy president

We are saying every process that must take place in any company where there are employees, it must take place within the parameters of the law.

Mike Shingange, Cosatu's first deputy president

Shingange says Cosatu is calling for an urgent political council with all the alliance partners where what is contained in the job summit framework must be clarified. He adds if the framework cannot be rescued then workers must stand up and fight.

If we fail to rescue the framework it means we must tear it apart and disregard everything that was said - it means it is war and workers must fight in every way necessary and that they are on their own.
