How often are people having sex — and is it enough?

New research by the San Diego State University has come out revealing how frequently other people are having penetrative sex.

Clinical sexologist Dr Eve says the health of your relationship should not be equated with the frequency of sex you have.

She says the occurrence of sex is often influenced by factors such as lifestyle, physical health, sex drive, age, body image, children, relationship tension, cheating or sexual dysfunction.

According to the study, once a week is the number of times most couples say make them happy and signals a good relationship.

The data suggest that people who were married or living together between 2010 and 2014 had sex 16 fewer times per year compared to 2000-2004.

The study revealed that people in their 20s are having sex more than 80 times per year on average, Dr Eve explains.

This number declines to 60 times per year by age 45, and 20 times per year by age 65.

Researchers found that more sex isn’t always better.

In fact, Dr Eve says there is evidence that frequent mediocre sex could lead to sexual dissatisfaction in a relationship, while great sex once in a while could add to relationship satisfaction.

Why are you counting the amount of sex you are having every single year?

Dr Eve, clinical sexologist

We tend to rate the state of our relationship, the level of love and connection, and our attractiveness by the frequency of sex that we're having.

Quantity [of sex] does not equate to sexual satisfaction or better relationship satisfaction.

The research show that men will overstate and women will understate the frequency of sex.
