Casac: It's almost certain that Zuma will appeal ruling on personal costs order

Constitutional lobby group Casac says former president Jacob Zuma will most likely appeal the court order that he pay a reported R10 million in legal fees for a failed court bid from 2017.

On Friday, the High Court in Pretoria dismissed Zuma’s application for leave to appeal the personal costs order in his failed bid to review the Public Protector State of Capture report.

Zuma will now have to pay out of his own pocket for the legal fees incurred.

However, Casac director Lawson Naidoo says the former president will probably stall the process with another appeal case, true to his style.

At the same time, Casac has brought a separate court bid challenging the State attorneys decisions to fund this round of legal applications by Zuma.

Naidoo says the outcome of this court application may put a stop to Zuma's ongoing and appeals.

Earlier this week, the DA and EFF approached the High Court to have Zuma, and not the State, pay the legal fees he has incurred since 2005 fighting criminal and civil matters.

Given the former president's track record with the courts, it's almost certain that he will seek to appeal the judgment.

Lawson Naidoo, Director of CASAC

I think the chances of success [of the appeal] are remote at the very best.

Ultimately, all of these costs are going to come out of the former president's own pocket.

They would have to reach an arrangement with the courts in order to repay that money, whatever it's a monthly deduction from his state pension.

The onus is very much on Jacob Zuma to repay that money in whatever way that he is able to do so.
