Resilience is the ability to recover quickly from difficult situations, explains counselling psychologist Ashleigh Yaman.

How do your kids respond to stressful events?

It's important for parents to inculcate resilient traits within their children and form connections with them from a young age.

Resilience is the ability to recover quickly from difficult situations, explains counselling psychologist Ashleigh Yaman.

Yaman says a child is exposed to various risk factors from as early as the womb. All of which require resilience.

Risk factors such as exposure to alcohol and drugs, birth defects, chronic sickness, abandonment, bullying and more.

She says the characteristics of resilient children include a healthy self-esteem, intelligence, strong self-concept, and the ability to self-regulate.

According to Yaman, parents who are more connected with their children are able to equip them with the tools they need to bounce back.

Resilience is the tendency to bounce back after a stressful situation.
