State Security Minister Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba says the entire management structure of the SSA was set up illegally.

The State Security Minister Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba has ordered a revetting of all agents in the SSA in a bid to flush out spooks accused of looting the slush fund of up to R1 billion.

Letsatsi-Duba’s says the entire management structure of the SSA was set up illegally with the aim to loot state funds.

Eric Pelser, head of ENACT programme at the Institute of Security Studies says the fact that the presidency has issued a statement in support of the minister's decision is an indication of how serious this matter is being taken.

The consequences can potentially be devastating but certainly not constructive for the rebuilding of a new dawn.

Eric Pelser, head of ENACT programme at the Institute of Security Studies

Pelser says agents may question why they are being revetted given that they don't have signatory rights over the allocation of monies. They may wonder why she is not rather starting at the very top, he adds.

He says the minister could be embarking on this process to gain a better understanding of who's who in the State Security Agency or simply a means of catching up with the vetting backlog that is long overdue.

The stakes are fairly high which is why I would imagine the Presidency is stepping in.

Eric Pelser, head of ENACT programme at the Institute of Security Studies
