Make Money Mondays

'I don’t spend much. I drive an old car. I’ve never been in debt'

I went to a private school where Ewan McGregor went… He’s a nice bloke. His father was the gym teacher… I enjoyed it.

I don’t spend an awful lot of money… I drive a 12-year-old car. I’m not seduced by ephemeral consumer goods…

Don’t have any debt! I’ve loathed it all my life. I’ve never been in debt…

Each week The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviews a famous person about her or his attitude to money (hopes and fears, successes and failures, etc.) as part of his weekly “Make Money Mondays, Personal Edition” feature.

This week he interviewed Chris Gilmour, well-known financial writer and Chairperson of the Investment Analysts Society SA.

Scottish born, Gilmour has been living in South Africa since 1982 when he started working as an investment analyst for Max Pollak & Freemantle, then one of the largest stockbroking firms on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

He regularly features as an investment authority on television and radio stations such as Aljazeera, BBC, CNN, Radio 702 and CapeTalk and is frequently quoted in print and electronic media including Business Day, Financial Mail and Bloomberg.

  • But what is it that he believes about money?

  • Does it keep him up at night?

  • Does he spend like crazy or save compulsively?

  • How did his childhood experiences shape his views on money?

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

Everything just changes before your eyes these days, doesn’t it?

Chris Gilmour, Investment Analysts Society SA

When I was at the largest Afrikaans stockbroking firm in the world… they were close to the guys at Naspers. I was encouraged to invest, even when it was unlisted. I didn’t follow that advice.
