In the parenting feature, creative parenting expert, Nikki Bush chats about the right age to give your child a cellphone.

Bush says that parents are no longer giving their kids basic feature phones.

We're giving them smartphones which are internet linked, which means that they have access to the entire world and the entire world has access to them adds Bush.

Gone are the stockings with the R20 items in them, now we are looking at smartphones. Kids are brand conscious so they want the latest and the greatest.

Nikki Bush, creative parenting expert

Bush says that if your kids are not primed and prepared for nastiness, cyberbullying, sexual predators and sexual danger, then they shouldn't have an internet linked smartphone.

A parent came to me and told me that her daughter was making rainbow waffles and posted it on WhatsApp, but her friends were being nasty online, telling her that her waffles were disgusting mentions Bush.

It's important that if you are going to give your child a cellphone, that you have many conversations with them.

Nikki Bush, creative parenting expert

Bush says that parents need to have more conversations that matter, and fewer speeches that don't.
