Vlakfontein murder accused bail hearing delayed by power cuts - again

The bail hearing of two suspects linked to the killings of seven Vlakfontein family members has once again been delayed at Lenasia Magistrates court due to a power outage.

Ernest Mabaso and Fita Khupe are accused of murdering seven people - four children and three women from the same family.

The two were expected to to formally apply for bail on Tuesday when the power went out, moving the hearing to Wednsday.

Eyewitness News Bonga Dlulane was at Wednesday's court appearance.

After hours of waiting, it did not get on, much to the annoyance of the prosecutors, the defence and the magistrate Maggie van der Merwe who said that she cannot keep delaying this any further because as you know, laws were changed to make bail applications stricter so you cannot keep people in jail more than seven days without deciding on the fate of their bail.

She is going on leave. She has transferred the matter and says she will deal with the consequences of that when she comes back.
