Mam' Winnie forged her politics long before she met Mandela - Sisonke Msimang
Author Sisonke Msimang says Winnie Mandela was a profoundly political person, long before she met her famous ex-husband.
She has called into question the idea that Mam' Winnie's political consciousness was only born when she met Madiba.
Msimang has written her second book, 'The Resurrection of Winnie Mandela', which she describes as a "not-biography".
The author says the book is less about the chronology of Mam' Winnie's life, but more about what her life says about the history of the nation.
She discussed the style of book and Mam' Winnie's complex life in conversation with Eusebius McKaiser.
When you write, you care about what is on the page.Sisonke Msimang, writer and commentator
I saw this as a reaction to a moment, rather than a biography that was in anyway going to try to do justice to the span of her life.Sisonke Msimang, writer and commentator
It's a biography of survival, it's a biography of the history of the nation through the life of a particular woman, but I'm not sure that it qualifies as a full biography.Sisonke Msimang, writer and commentator
She may have been treated as though she was an accompaniment to her famous ex-husband, but we know that in reality, she wasn't.Sisonke Msimang, writer and commentator
The notion that Nelson Mandela politicised her, I have questions about.Sisonke Msimang, writer and commentator
My reading of her life... is that the place that she was born, the places she lived, forged her politics - long before she meets Nelson Mandela.Sisonke Msimang, writer and commentator
He [Nelson Mandela] is present, sort of, as a shadow, rather than her being present in his shadow, which I think is how people often think about her.Sisonke Msimang, writer and commentator
When we think about Winnie Mandela, the distinction between strength and resilience is key.Sisonke Msimang, writer and commentator
