[LISTEN] 31 years of theatre and Janice Honeyman is still going strong

In the profile interview, actress, director and author Janice Honeyman chats about catering to a South African audience, and shares her experiences of 'blacking up' during the Apartheid era.

Honeyman says that she always tries to incorporate something for everyone in her scripts.

She adds that the South African audience needs to feel like the set and script is there's, even though it looks British.

Honeyman says that things have changed because now, they use sets from England.

I have to make the scripts from scratch because they are filled with strange medieval texts and old English references adds Honeyman.

Honeyman says that in the past, she was young and unaware of the racial injustices in the theatre scene.

I was casted in a coloured role and had to black up as did the rest of the white cast.

Honeyman says that things were happening and she started to feel like things should be mixed.

I'm from Cape Town and I understand the Cape coloured idiom quite clearly but it's not mine she adds.

Honeyman says that she told management about a person who could play the part but they just casted another white women for the role.

There were alot of coloured people around who could have played the parts just as easily.
