Prince Mashele: What I see with the EFF is a demolition brigade

The year is drawing to a close and the 2019 general elections are around the corner.

Has South Africa's third largest party had a good year?

With 25 seats in the Parliament, what impact have the red berets had on South Africans?

Eusebius McKaiser engaged political analyst Prince Mashele and author Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh on the politics of the EFF and what it has been able to achieve this year.

The discussion ranged from racism, Africanism and the parties political ideology.

I'm not arguing that the EFF created black radicalism, I'm arguing that they brought black radicalism in the centre of the South African politics where it belongs and they have done so more effectively than the PAC in the last 20 years.

Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, Author

The question of racial disparity is not some marginal question if that is absent from the South African debate; then what political debate are we having in South Africa? And that is why I think it's a great credit to the EFF that despite being wrong on a number of issues nobody can deny that when racism rears it's ugly head in South Africa people turn to the EFF.

Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, Author

The image we have of the EFF is an image of a party that breaks things. If these chaps come here cups are going to be upside down which is right. Then the question is where is the constructive ideal? That is the major gap of the EFF.

Prince Mashele, Political analsyt

I don't know what South Africa would look like if we were to hand over the country to the EFF. There is no articulation a constructive ideal. What I see is a demolition brigade. I know they will mess up the place, I just don't know how we would rebuild it.

Prince Mashele, Political analyst
