In words of Raymond Suttner: "There continues to be widespread xenophobia in South Africa and some discourse has dangerous implications. When the Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi, referred to overcrowding of hospitals by immigrants constituting a danger of the spreading of disease he fed into a common depiction of immigrants as bearers of disease. This has a dangerous history of stigmatisation-found in South Africa, Rwanda and also found with Hitler."

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi recently said that South Africa is flooded with illegal immigrants, resulting in hospitals not being able to perform well.

The data is clear, we are not flooded by non-nationals. 3-4% of the South African population are non-nationals, there are places in the country where you will find a large number of foreign nationals seeking medical attention. People tend to use those numbers at a nationals level.

Jo Vearey Associate Professor African Centre For Migration & Society

Speaking to Joanne on the Afternoon Drive, prof. Vearey said everyone in the country that is using public healthcare is facing problems, let us not blame non-nationals. She said it is critical by not dealing with the broader issue and making sure that the healthcare system in the country is improved and is better for everyone.
