State Capture Inquiry

Eusebius says Manyi will never be able to defend TNA as a bonifide newspaper

Former GCIS Head Mzwanele Manyi on Monday struggled to explain why under his tenure at the GCIS the then Gupta-owned The New Age received more government revenue than most daily newspapers.

He told the state capture inquiry that the newspaper received 4.5% of government spending but things got heated when he was asked about how much TNA received in its first year.

Show Host Eusebius McKaiser says Manyi dug a hole but instead of pushing the lawyer into it, he jumped into the hole himself.

It was interesting because Advocate Maleka, I thought if you are a law student you would have received a very good structural lesson of how to cross-examine without shouting, raising your tone and using too many words, in just asking simple questions and letting the dude on the stand speak as much as possible and eventually if you let someone speak, they reveal who they are.

Eusebius McKaiser, Show Host

Mzwanele Manyi is like the clever person Hlaudi Motsoeneng. He is dodgy weird, the logic is circuitous, all of the above, maybe some of the above. But every now and then you think this guy is making sense.

Eusebius McKaiser, Show Host

And then you let him speak long enough and suddenly he unravels. An example of this is that at one point he tells us that Telma is objective and it is the system that it was used to justify the disproportionate amounts of GCIS funding going to The New Age.

Eusebius McKaiser, Show Host

So you say ok, we know you are lying but let us go with it, I kept thinking as I am eating my popcorn at home, can someone whisper the correct follow up question into Advocate Maleka's ear.

Eusebius McKaiser, Show Host

And eventually, patiently he just says to him, can we talk about TNA and the audited figures in terms of circulation and readership, there were none were they?

Eusebius McKaiser, Show Host

And then you have a 180-degree turnaround from Mzwanele Manyi. Because suddenly he had to concede that even if Telma was the basis on which most established newspapers were getting less than a R100 000 a year, and TNA were getting upwards of a couple of million rands in its first year of business, that actually even the criteria that go into this particular template for deciding how to increase the spoils when it comes to government advertising, TNA couldn't have met the criteria.

Eusebius McKaiser, Show Host

Eusebius adds that this is because we don't even know who read that paper.

And then what does he say at this point? He says, oh no, who cares about Telma as it is not objective. So 30 minutes ago, that was the objective basis on which you were giving disproportionate amounts of money to The New Age and now suddenly when you have been shown up, you say that is not the reason why so much money was put there.

Eusebius McKaiser, Show Host

Here is the bottom line. There is no way in hell even with your linguistic austerity, you will never be able to defend The New Age as being a bonafide newspaper and not simply being a conduit for corruption.
