Cheryl Carolus testifies at the State Capture Inquiry

Testifying today at the State Capture Inquiry, the former South African Airways (SAA) board chair Cheryl Carolus said the airline’s route to Mumbai, India, was important for connecting major global flows of trade through Johannesburg.

Carolus told the State Capture Inquiry that Gigaba would misrepresent some facts and speak badly about the SAA board. She said bringing passengers from Beijing and Mumbai were the key markets, where South Africa was growing its own trade and those same people South Africa was trading with were also trading into Africa.

Carolus told the Inquiry about the meeting that went on between one of the SAA board members and Malusi Gigaba, reports Manyathela.

She said in one of the meetings that were organised by Gigaba, they waited for three hours for people Gigaba said would join the meeting and it happened to be the president of Jet Airways. When that meeting took off, the president of Jet Airways was berating and interrogating one of the SAA board members about why they are dropping their route to Mumbai.

Former public enterprises minister Barbra Hogan previously told the State Capture Inquiry that there was a lobby for the route to be dropped to benefit the Gupta-linked Jet Airways.
