Shark Spotters will be on duty at eight City beaches from 12 December to 7 January 2019 as visitors to our coastline increase.

The Shark Spotters organisation has urged Cape Town beach-goers to be vigilant and aware of shark risks every time they enter the water this summer season.

Shark Spotters will be on duty at eight City beaches from 12 December 2018 to 7 January 2019 as visitors to our coastline increase.

The Shark Spotters will be stationed at beaches including Muizenberg, St James/Kalk Bay, Caves in Kogel Bay, Glencairn, Clovelly, Monwabisi and The Hoek in Noordhoek.

The City has confirmed that the shark exclusion net is already being deployed at Fish Hoek beach on a daily basis, weather permitting.

It's said the presence of sharks along the False Bay coastline is more prevalent during warmer months.

Shark Spotters CEO, Sarah Waries, says the shark exclusion net cannot be deployed on days when there are strong winds or big swells.

According to Waries, the last shark bite incident in Cape Town took place on 1 August 2014 near Muizenberg Bay.

Prior to that, the last fatal incident was in Kogel Bay in 2012.

She warns that beach-goers should remain cautious, despite the apparent drop in shark sightings or incidents, as things could change at any moment.

We can't relax, we're always very alert, looking for sharks.

Sarah Waries, CEO at Shark Spotters

We could have sudden changes in environmental conditions which mean that white sharks come closer inshore.

Sarah Waries, CEO at Shark Spotters

You needed to be thinking about shark risks before you get in the water and asking about recent shark activity or factors.
