'Corporal punishment prohibited in the home will destroy moral fibre of family'

The issue of corporal punishment has been challenged by different social groups with some believing that spanking won't harm a child while others believe corporal punishment is another form of violence against children.

Education activist Hendrick Makaneta says there is nothing wrong with 'a little spank' to keep the child disciplined.

We believe that parents should be given that freedom to be able to discipline their children. We must admit that it is a general trend and many parents across the country believe it is necessary to control their kids to make sure that they are on the right track by making sure that the child understands the basic rules within the family.

Hendrick Makaneta, Education Activist

Makaneta says it is not possible to negotiate or reason with a two-year-old not to do something that could potentially put their lives in danger because of such young children do not have the mental capacity to understand.

He says a little pain will get the child to learn not to repeat the same mistake.

Once the corporal punishment is prohibited in the home it will destroy the moral fibre of the family.

A family is a basic unit of society and if you disempower parents you are ultimately destroying the family.

Lucy Jamieson, a senior researcher at Children's Institute (UCT), has a different view on the matter.

She says research has shown that parents hit children to cause pain but the shock in the pain carries with it a sense of fear.

When you say to a child, don't do that or I will smack you, you are intending to cause fear and that has a negative impact.

Lucy Jamieson Senior researcher at Children's Institute (UCT)

The matter is currently before the Constitutional Court whether the practice of smacking children should be allowed to continue or if it violates the child's rights. Judgment has been reserved in the matter.
