'Journalists need to be extra vigilant, not just blindly report on everything'

Columnist and journalist Max du Preez caused a stir earlier in the week when he called for no more live coverage of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) rallies as they are spreading fake news and stoking social tensions.

According to Du Preez, 'if we allow loud mouth groups to dominate the national discourse purely because they are controversial and make the most noise, we oversee the distortion of public opinion.'

Speaking to Nickolaus Bauer, standing in on The Xolani Gwala, Du Preez says he also been slaughtered by the Afrikaans media for his criticism of the amount of publicity they give to AfriForum.

Purely because AfriForum also threatens, shouts and intimidates.

He says free speech in an open society and a democracy needs to be defended.

If we don't actively defend and protect these rights, they will disappear and we as journalists are in the front line.

Max du Preez, Columnist and Journalist

He adds that free speech and the availability of information are the most critical pillars of democracy and no news should ever be concealed.

He says journalists should be extra vigilant in covering live broadcasts.

We have the power to decide who, how much and what prominence we should be given to who and we should be very careful with that responsibility.

Max du Preez, Columnist and Journalist

We can't put all the parties on a live broadcast, all the time, at the same time. We have to make decisions and that is where we should be extra vigilant.

Max du Preez, Columnist and Journalist

He says journalists need to be clear on what is hoped to be achieved instead of reporting blindly.
