New NDPP described as an 'excellent' pick by the president

The appointment of Shamila Batohi as the new National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) has been described as an 'excellent' pick, according to Eyewitness News reporter Clement Manyathela.

Batohi who is a former state prosecutor from KwaZulu-Natal currently serves as an International Criminal Court law advisor and will start her term in February next year.

Having worked for the NPA nearly ten years ago, Manyathela says there is a belief that she is 'untainted' by the supposed factionalism that affected the previous administration.

A lot for people are saying...she has been out of the loop, out of the NPA for a decade, so she is not necessarily tainted by the factional battles that we have seen playing themselves out, she has international experience at the ICC and she is a woman, it is about time.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

Speaking on some of the challenges Batohi is walking into, Manyathela notes what he says is a 'credibility crisis 'at the NPA, as well as the possible prosecution of those linked to state capture.

She comes at a time where there are these big cases that the NPA and the Hawks are looking at. The State Capture Commission is unravelling, a lot of people are being implicated. The Guptas have left the country. So there are these big state capture investigations that she will have to oversee.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

Already people have criticised the NPA and said you have messed up, especially with the Estina Dairy Farm project which was provisionally withdrawn just the other day.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

She would really have to deal with the divisions at the NPA and how this office can restore its credibility.

Meanwhile, the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (Casac) has also welcomed the appointment.

CASAC Executive Secretary Lawson Naidoo says Batohi will require the support of all sections of South African society to turn the National Prosecuting Authority around.

She is someone who is a professional prosecutor, I think the international experience is something that will assist her in facing the challenges she will have at the prosecuting authority.
